The idea was hatched on Memorial Day Weekend 32 years ago in Long Beach Island, NJ, by a few hungry, adventurous young men with big dreams and empty pockets.

The original EGG was a quaint luncheonette that very quickly outgrew its shell. It was then moved across the street to a bigger venue which afforded the bigger menu we’re still known for today!

In 2017, restaurateur Rob LaScala, owner of the LaScala Restaurant Group, purchased The Chicken or the Egg, known as The Chegg, from the Cohen family because Mark Cohen felt he was ready for some R&R after three decades of dedication to this widely popular landmark.

Having started in the hospitality business many years ago in Ocean City, Rob, passionate about unique, beloved beach town eateries, fell in love with The Chegg and took it over, vowing to keep true to its charm.

Before long Rob decided why not expand and bring The Chegg to Marlton, NJ, thinking it would be a great fit….and make it a whole lot larger (given the long lines to get in at the Chegg in Beach Haven), add a huge beer garden with seating around fire pits, build two amazing bars, one inside and one out, adorn some areas with flat screen TVs for sports-watching enthusiasts, and so on and so on…

Finally, after building from the ground up, Chegg Marlton opened its doors in February 2023 in the Renaissance Square on Route 70 East not too far from LaScala’s Fire at the Promenade on Route 73 South.

When we boast that there is something for everyone, it’s not without merit. There are classics on the menu and others that are completely original and unique. And then there are the wings… a lot of places talk a good buffalo wing, but The Chegg truly delivers. The wings are big, juicy, and available in 18 sauces, both Original Breaded and Naked. The Chicken or the Egg has become recognized locally as well as nationally for these big beauties. And best of all, the whole menu (breakfast, too) is available anytime….and wait until you see the very cool, and also very large, drink menu at Chegg Marlton!

But for us, it’s not just about what we serve…it’s about who we serve…it’s about family. It’s about camaraderie. It’s about good times. Now with two locations, the story continues on proudly, a lot more eggs are being cracked, and a lot more fun is being had….come on over and join us—welcome to the family!
